Details of Island (Imja Tse)Peak

Island Peak, is a mountain at the altitude of 6189m in Mt. Everest (Sagarmatha national Park) region of Nepal. It is known as Imja Tse. It  lies on eastern Nepal. The peak was named as Island Peak in 1951 by Eric Shipton. Since it appears as an island in a sea of ice which view from Dingboche. The peak was later renamed in 1983 to Imja Tse. But Island Peak remains the popular choice. Imja Tse is a popular mountaineering objective for climbers to have a better practice in Nepal. They take it is the standard climbing route even it has the difficulty rating of Alpine. The peak is comfortably can climbed in about 14 days to 16 days depends on your choice.
As this trek is inside the Sagarmatha national park in the everest trekking region. The trek starts from the Lukla as we fly there from Kathmandu.

Detail Itinerary for Climbing the Island Peak

Day 01: Arrival Kathmandu (1,365m/4,428ft)
welcome to Nepal ( the Tribhuvan International Airport :TIA, in Kathmandu),and warm  greeting from Nepal Boundary Trekking (NBTA)  will pick you  up at the airport  and go to  our hotel in Thamel. In the evening you have welcome dinner  probably the authentic Nepali meal.

Day 02: Kathmandu valley Sightseeing 
sightseeing of few places in the morning  of Kathmandu valley and prepare our things for the trek tomorrow.

Day 03: Fly to Lukla and walk to Phakding (2800m/9240ft)
at Tenzing-Hillary Airport 45 mins flight and  then walk  3 hours  to Phakding (2,652m/8,700ft over night stay here in Phakding.

Day 04: Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440m/11,283ft): 5-6 hours
Today walking through  pine forest along the Dudh Koshi River quiet easy  filling your to beautiful nature. We get in Namche Bazaar where our night will spend.

Day 05: Namche Bazaar (3,440 m/11,283 ft): Acclimatization Day
today acclimatization day and we hike to Everest view point we can see Everest range with a magnificent view of Everest and many other peak of the range as well as visit the local museum containing exhibits displaying the area’s native flora and fauna as well as the history of the Mount Everest region.Another option  hike to Khumjung village (5-6 hours) and visit the Edmund Hillary School and Khumjung Monastery (a monastery famous for housing the head of the Yeti!) then back to Namche Bazaar for the night.

Day 06: Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3,870m/12,694ft) 5- 6 hours
It is easy walking day until to Tengboche. Tengboche,  is  famous by Tengboche monastery  it is largest monastery among all the monastery in  Everest region.  You see the panoramic 360-degree view of the Himalayas, including Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam and Thamserku.

Day 07: Tengboche to Dingboche (4,360 m/14,300 ft): 5 to 6 hours
Getting  at the Himalaya, as its backdrop, enjoying the beautiful Himalayan landscape and walking down to Debuche, along Imja River. Taking way of Upper Pangboche could be the best choose as it provides pristine view of the mountains as well  the Pangboche monastery. The descend way by  the river and head off  up to Dingboche.

Day 08: Dingboche to Chhukung (4,730m/15,518ft): 3-4 hours
Today’s trek to the chukung could be  memorized as you see the amazing view of Ama Dablam, the ridge of Nuptse-Lhotse, Tawache and Chalotse surrounds that feels like deeping  into the beauties of the Himalaya.

Day 09: Acclimatization: Climb Chhukung Ri (5,546m)and trek back to Chhukung: 3 – 4 hours.
Here another for acclimatization. Resting day and going upto  Chhukung Ri wouldn’t be that bad it helps body adjusting to the high altitude. Chucking Ri is the best point to have fantastic view of Ama Dablam and Amphu Labsa peaks then  back to Chhukung for night spend.

Day 10: Chhukung to Island Peak Base camp (5,200m/17,060ft): 3-4 hours
Little step way but not really difficult walk to  Island Peak Base Camp. The way goes to south then turn east to the main line of the valley. Then walk down to  southern flank of moraine from the Lhotse Glacier it is bit windy path.

Day 11: Pre-Climb training on Island Peak Base Camp
It’s a training day learning about how to climb the peak. The  techniques and the proper ways of using climbing gears such as the ice axe, climbing boots and crampons, harness, ascender, etc will be taught.  You get all the information of how to use of the rope and go ups and down. The  training of  Island Peak climbing will give by  experience climber and will boost your confidence and climbing skills to increase the chances of scaling the summit  you will enjoy the experience. The rest of the day is hiking to high camp and back or resting for the next day’s climb.

Day 12: Island Peak Base Camp to Island Peak Summit (6,189m/20,305ft), back to base camp: 10-12 hours
you are being informed already about what time you have to  wake up so getting up early as around 12:00Am or 01:00Am. It is very  important to reach the summit before noon because afternoon can happen the strong winds in the highlands that might be a barrier for a successful summit. This is not difficult, but not easy either the several short rock steps to climb until finding the right way. The route then follows a ridge line, that leads to an exhilarating and exposed traverse onto the snout of the summit glacier. The guides will fix a rope when required. A steep snow slope leads us onto the summit ridge. Both fixed rope and man rope will be used during the climb for safety. After enjoying the summit views, and taking pictures, we descend all the way to Island Peak Base Camp where some of our crew is waiting for us. We celebrate on our successful Island Peak climb.

Day 13: Island Peak Base Camp to Pangboche (3,985m/13,074ft) 5-6 hours
So, now easy  walk  descend way  to the lower altitudes to the pangboche. The same route to get back through the valley of Khumbu Khola, beautiful Sherpa villages Orsho and Shomare. Pangboche is a scenic village surrounded by Everest to the north, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Kangtaiga to the east, the Kongde range to the south and the Imja Tse River.

Day 14: Pangboche to Namche Bazaar: 4-5 hours
As long the route to get back is the same path we walked upto  island peak here are nothing more to explain about  the  journey so  the way  follows down to the Imja Khola and up through the forest . After lunch at Tengboche, continuing walk  and crossing the bridge over the Dudh Koshi River, and the Dudh Koshi gorge descending to the pine forests here if got the luck can see wildlife such as mountain goats, snow leopards, colorful pheasants, etc  and arriving at  Namche Bazaar is camp for tonight.

Day 15: Namche Bazaar to Lukla: 6-7 hours
Today is it bit long but as we start walking early as  before or at 7:00Am to Lukla it wont be a difficult walk. The lunch spot will be at phakding and an hour rest or so would grab the energy to head off to Lukla.

Day 16: Fly to Kathmandu
Flying at the morning to Kathmandu and from Lukla means the journey of amazing expedition of Island peak is ended. Now still various things are there in Kathmandu that you are interested to have souvenir shopping for your loved one and people you know and enjoying with the  local authentic menu as well western bars and clubs.

Day 17: Final departure
All the activities you have done in Nepal during your stay here could be one of your best and memorable time. Now you got most things you wanted to from here. We are pleased having you at as again but for now we say goodbye until next time.
